Research

We work with museums and archives to study surviving artefacts wherever possible to ensure every detail of our reconstructions is accurate.
Consultancy
With an academic background as an historian and experience in the museum sector, we have combined our skills to create a historical consultancy service for film, television, and theatre focused specifically on headwear.Â
Our expertise spans the seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries with an emphasis on the anglophone world and Europe. We will work with you to advise on the nuances of headwear in the past, much like fashion more generally, hats served to communicate innumerable details about a given character's social background, tastes, experiences, ambitions and even political views. Hats were also endlessly adapted, altered, and modernised. A fine hat has always been a considerable investment, especially so when hats were so particularly valued for their practical utility in an age before mass motorised transporation.

Throughout history headdress has been central to military identity, from distinguishing rank or position, to identifying unit or regiment, even down to the particular company within a given battalion. Historical military headdress is a vastly complicated subject with a great deal of subtlety that can be impregnable to the non-specialist approaching the topic.
