Hat making is an ancient and venerable trade, but owing to a general decline in the industry, and an offshoring of manufacturing by the few surviving hat brands, it has become a Heritage Crafts England red-list endangered craft.
For this reason we feel a responsibility for sharing our skills and inspiring others to get involved and learn a new skill.
An Introduction to Hat Making
We have designed a one day introduction to hat making workshop aimed at beginners to take you through each stage of the hat making process.Â

You will learn the basics of blocking, trimming, and lining, beginning with a raw hood and finishing with a wearable hat.

Our small maximum class size of 4 ensures every student receives plenty of attention. The day begins at 09:30 and runs until 16:30 with an hour for lunch. Light refreshments will be provided.

Additionally we offer workshops focused on the nuances of historical hat making in which we will teach you to create a simple round-blocked eighteenth-century cocked hat.
Requirements
Whilst our courses are aimed at beginners with no hat making experience, some basic sewing skills will ensure you get the most out of the day.
